F-104G VA+133 MFG 1 leading a formation Take-off at Schleswig-Jagel in 1965 F-104G, construction number 683D-7157, company model 683-10-19, built by Messerschmitt manufactured by South Group (ARGE-Süd); assembly start at Messerschmitt-Manching March 2, 1964 assembly in Fighterbomber version according contract lot 6; first flight May 12, 1964 coded KE+457 project "Yoga" as Fighterbomber (for MFG 1) with "AS.30" anti-ship missile delivery system, Sidewinder missile launch rails and long range tanks camouflage scheme "Norm 62" according tech order "TA-196"; acceptance date by BABwMTT July 22, 1964 VA+133 to MFG 1 at Schleswig-Jagel AB delivery date July 28, 1964; crashed on May 22, 1967 shortly after take-off from Norvenich AB at Lommersum north of Euskirchen caused by an engine failure due to compressor stall (caused by a FOD, likely sucked in during taxi), pilot ejected safely; struck off charge order (AVA) November 6, 1967. Project "Yoga": 22 F-104G Fighterbomber for the 2. Staffel (Squadron) of MFG 1 at Schleswig-Jagel with built-in "AS.30" anti-ship missile delivery wiring system, later the number was increased to 28. A two-ship flight returning from a cross country in Italy, refueled at an intermediate base (Norvenich). On departure at 370 knots and 2.500 feet, the lead experienced a compressor stall. He retarded the throttle to idle and then advanced it again until the EGT was 600 degrees. This gave him an RPM of 70 or 80% (the pilot is not sure). The throttle remained in this position until ejection at 1.100 feet. At no time did the pilot attempt normal stall clearing procedures or jettison fuel tanks. The airplane crashed into an open field with no significant property damage. The pilot experienced tumbling but had good man/seat separation and landed uninjured.
