TF-104G "825" (5939) during the OPTP (Optical Periscope Test Program) in 1993 with the REVD extenal modification

manufactured by Lockheed (ARGE-USA) and Messerschmitt (ARGE-Süd) and VFW; parts assembled at Lockheed (flown as 66-13628) in 1967

The periscope underneath the F-104 flown by NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, CA, is the fairing that housed the Research External Visibility Display (REVD),
an upside down periscope designed to aid pilots landing future high speed aircraft at high angles of attack.
The fairing is visible on the underside of the forward fuselage just below the cockpit.
Such aircraft are expected to land with the nose of the aircraft very high in the air blocking the pilot's view of the runway.
The REVD program was a joint eff ort of Dryden; NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA
