F-104A "FG-791" (56-0791) of the 83rd Fighter Interceptor Squadron for Operation "Jonah Able" at Tao Yuan AB, Taiwan during the Quemoy Crisis The following 12 F-104A were identified from AF records to have been stationed at Tao Yuan in Taiwan during the Quemoy Crisis:56-0791, 56-0795, 56-0817, 56-0823, 56-0828, 56-0837, 56-0838, 56-0842, 56-0844, 56-0849, 56-0850 and 56-0860 As an additional task, the armament folks were required to reinstall the gatling guns in our jets that had been short sightedly removed for our ADC mission at home. Because those who made those decisions were amored with air to air missiles and considered the guns outmoded, it became an unnecessary burden for the armament community in this crisis. All those gatling guns suddenly reappeared on Formosa, but they did, along with a Lockheed contingent of helpers. So the 83 FIS initially started operating without the gun at Hamilton and installed the gun during the TDY setup in Formosa. They were out of the birds, but on hand, we just reinstalled them. The gun was pulled out when we got back from Formosa and replaced with 300 pounds of ballast. The birds went to the Guard in that configuration and remained that way till we took them back in 1963. When we got the birds back, we put the guns back in and trained in air to air gunnery. copyright © Peitzmeier archive
