157th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS) South Carolina ANG at Congaree AB , Eastover,(Near Columbia), SC

called to active duty as "Federalized" ANG squadron from November 1, 1961 until August 15, 1962 and relocated to Moron AB, Spain on November 24, 1961
under command of 65th Air Division USAFE. Returned to state control McEntire August 15, 1962

In October of 1962 the United States and the Soviet Union nearly went to war over the issue of Soviet Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs)
in Castro's Cuba. The 157th FIS was deployed to Florida during this period to provide the Air Defense Command (ADC) with a high performance,
quick reaction point defense interceptor and to augment ADC squadrons already in the area.
